Norma is a tragedia lirica (lyric tragedy) in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini, with a libretto by Felice Romani based on Alexandre Soumet's play Norma, ou L'infanticide (Norma, or The Infanticide). It premiered at La Scala in Milan on 26 December 1831 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of the bel canto repertoire. The opera is celebrated for Bellini's long, expressive melodies and the demanding title role, which requires exceptional vocal technique and dramatic intensity. Norma's prayer, "Casta diva," remains one of the most famous soprano arias ever written. Among the most acclaimed interpreters of the role are Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, and Montserrat Caballé.
